What's a decent cheap midi controller for punching in drum patterns?

I want to start demoing things more before taking them to the band to save time

This means punching in rudimentary drum patterns to coordinate kick and snare with bass and guitar

Is there a decent cheap midi controller for this? I don't need anything fancy

I haven't really got a clue how I will go about actually using it. I have Pro Tools but I've only ever tracked live audio, no midi or virtual instruments

Maybe garageband would be better for demos but the kids-glove nature of it winds me up

Ta muchly

Well if an Akai MPX8 is good enough for the mindblowing Tory Slusher.

    It's not a competition.

I'll see if I can find it.

I did like it but Lady BMcH said my finger drumming came right through the floor.

Very talented, but a slower blink rate than two serial killers...

Never knew BPM stood for 'blinks per murder'. Every day is a school day

I have a Launchpad and that's pretty good.

The MPCs are meant to have good pads.

If you've got a midi keyboard already, there a few finger drumming keyboard tutorials on Youtube.

I keep going back to the following video, and making slow progress.

Personally I would just use a mouse and program it in (which is what I do). But if you really want to Jay Postones from tesseract ended up not being able to paly drums for a while due to injury and now writes his stuff on a midi keyboard by preference before learning it at the kit and he's certainly no slouch. Theres a few videos where he goes over how he has it setup.

If a kyboard is not your thing then I have a ableton push 1 and thats pretty decent too.
