I could just play a conventional F#maj7 but I like the addition of the higher voicing. I apply it to lots of different chords all over the neck, but I do have pretty big hands. (The pictured Loar LH300 has a huuuge neck btw)

Out of interest I just tried to fret @p90fool's chord. I struggled to do it his way and actually found it easier to do without the thumb, by doing a half barre with the little finger:

^^^ That's how proper guitarists do it! 

Unfortunately I've broken and dislocated my little finger (it never really recovered from the latter) so I wouldn't have anywhere near the strength needed for that.

I could play it @Stuckfast's way no worries at all. Easy-peasy. As for @p90fool's method, I couldn't even come close!
