    EMF - Schubert Dip

I bought it some years after it came out just because I liked Unbelievable from when I was young.

ICBM mentioned Black's Wonderful Life, what a cracking good song. I came across that in 2005 (on a mixed DVD of eighties video clips, I think The Jam was also on that one) and love it - I don't think I've ever heard anything else from them at all though - but it's the kind of thing where I would have bought the album just based on the song if I'd stumbled across it.

An ex girlfriend of mine bought No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom album based on the Don’t Speak single, and was then quite disappointed to find the rest of the material was ska punk and not chart topping ballads.   Bang average ska punk at that.

Essentially the opposite process for me, based on Don't Speak I was heavily put off No Doubt for years but it turns out that I really like Tragic Kingdom apart from that song.  Spiderwebs and Just a Girl for example are cracking.

Spiderwebs is amazing - and the best use of pinch harmonics in a song ever.

I'm sure Zakk Wylde would beg to differ.

He might, but he'd be wrong. Spiderwebs is so brilliant because basically the whole song is played with pinch harmonics, but never in an unnecessary over-the-top way.

I actually got drawn to Black because of the single 'Sweetest Smile'. Wonderful Life had been released the year before (1986), done nothing, but re-issued after the success of Sweetest Smile. From memory they (he) were popular with a late night radio host, and Wonderful Life, although not a hit in 86, was played regularly until 87 when Sweetest Smile was released. Amazing how such a great song only reached 72 in the charts on it's original release.

I guess if it was a re-issue not a re-release they may have jazzed it up in some way.

Anyway, Sweetest Smile, love this tune.

EDIT: Didn't realise he had died (Colin Vearncombe) in a car crash back in 2016. RIP

I wasn't suggesting he'd be right. ;)   I must have heard Spiderwebs but I don't remember it, I'll try to listen later.

The Doors debut album and most Jimi Hendrix are the only ones where every tracks a belter.
I've come to accept that many albums contain filler due to contractual constraints.

So nobody's recorded an all killer no filler album since 1970?

I think cemetery gates by Pantera gets my vote for best use of pinch harmonics. They make that riff.

I think Suede's debut of 1993 is definitely "all killer no filler".

Of course, that question mark was a typo.

Saw the topic title and this immediately came to mind.

Goodnight Moon was a masterpiece but the rest of the album is utter bollocks.

I feel bad for this twice - once for buying it and secondly for playing Goodnight Moon in the company of a good friend who liked the song so much he instantly bought the album on iTunes!

    Sorry, Jeremy!
