Folk rock with virtuoso playing?

Sure, I know Fairport (latter era) and most of the bigger acts, but is there anyone else I should check out? More interested in the electric side of things.

Maybe you're already familiar with him, and not virtuoso in a standard way, but definitely unique player - Mark Kozelek and his bands/projects.

JSD Band are my favourite

Steeleye was Ashley's next step after Fairport, the first album is what you want for electric but they had a good run when Bob (RIP) joined: Below the Salt / Parcel of Rogues / Commoners (esp. for Long Lankin).

Steeleye Span were one of the best live bands I've ever seen.

'Virtuoso' leads me to think of Moving Hearts.

I was going to say Bothy, if you want full on high speed pyrotechnics! There's a few other bands in a similar vein. Depends what you want really.

Contraband - notable as it has the Jackson brothers and John Martin in it who went on to establish Ossian.

I've done SS's Parcel of Rogues and quite a bit of the Fotheringay stuff in the past. Cheers.

I really like early Clannad for this as well. The first three albums, they had a jazz drummer make an appearence on the first one, he was just in the studio at the time (they won a competition to go in the studio!). 

English folk rock: Lindisfarne and offshoots (Jack the Lad), Oysterband, Fiddlers Dram (Didn't we have a lovely day......you can ignore that one! They were basically Oysterband), Albion Band and variations of.

Lots of people go for Horslips (Irish) but I can't get into them at all.

JSD are the best, rip roaring Scots.

Like I said, depends what floats your boat really. Fairport did one good album.

I like Alba, that's got Sean O'Rourke (the 'S' from JSD) and Tony Cuffe (Ossian) and warpipes! But that's not electric. It is brilliant though.

Ta! Lots to dig into here. Fairport did one good album? Which? I humbly disagree. 

Unhalfbricking, Liege & Lief and Full House all have stuff on them I really enjoy.
