My experience is that I didn’t really have to sight read until I started playing (on bass guitar) with a party band that worked from a huge pad of printed sheet music. Fortunately for me they were quite tolerant and easy-going!

If you can find a local big band, offer to stand in for the guitarist on any rehearsals they can’t make. If you do it well enough you may even end up on a gig with them (for a risibly small fee, but that’s beside the point here).
