School me on 230V/ 110V transformers

Haven't used one ever.
Do's - don'ts, any particularly good ones?
Safe? Quiet?
What do I need to know about them if I decide to import an amp from the US?

Lots of flimsy cheap and nasty Chinese-made ones… avoid the common metal-cased ones with multiple voltage selections in the back and two different voltage outputs on the front - they’re poorly made and borderline unsafe in my opinion. Very easy to connect wrongly and blow something.

Perhaps surprisingly, the plastic-cased types are usually fine. The large cylindrical ones with a couple of outputs on the top are particularly good.

A 300VA one will be sufficient for most amps below 50W, 500VA for anything over that.
