Anyone else listen to them?

I love em, wish I had found them ages ago, yesterday had to drive to Leeds and back (from Surrey) and listened to Tony Iommi`s Black Sabbath book, it`s excellent and made the hours fly by.

However after 8 hours of stories of Black Sabbath, I needed a change and started listening to The Martian, on chapter 9 now and it is also brilliant, made an hour in the gym fly by.

I guess if you are not solitary often it would be hard to find the time, but Im happy my dull gym session has now become interesting!!

Any other suggestions to listen to?

    Sherlock Holmes stories.

Excellent abridged version of "Hound" read by Tony Brittain.

What about radio plays? "Old Harry's Game" was ace.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

Indeed.  The R4 afternoon dramas cover a broad spectrum, but there have been some excellent ones.  Plus the classic serial broadcasts on a Sunday afternoon.  You just need to work out how to d/l them.

    ;)

Yeh..big +1 for the BBC too.. all the plays and dramas are top gun...

If you like Lord of the Rings listen to the 1980s production....13 hrs...magnificent.
And big names playing the parts

Used to love the Sherlock Holmes episodes with Clive Merrison too...

I'd buy these adiobooks and rerun again and again

Most are available from your local library.

Borrow the CD and rip them.

PG Woodhouse.  Blandings or Jeeves and Wooster.  Much better than the radio.

Desert Island Discs podcasts are good, free and there a good database of people to choose from. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs Am tempted to get the Audiobook for the TuneIn Beatles book, I think it's around 50 hours of audio!

I like the sound of 50 hours of desert island discs, I also really like the Radio4 plays in the afternoons and will admit to listening to The Archers  whilst waiting !

I've been doing the same thing as I walk to and from work.

There's a whole article on lifehacker (iirc) about free audiobooks. I can't find it but here is one of the sites that I can remember: https://www.librivox.org/

I'm working through Simon Vance's readings of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books at the moment. I've read the books many times but I'm really enjoying trying out audiobooks for a change. Vance is such a good reader - he brings the characters to life - so it's more like a radio drama than just a reading of a novel. People really rate Patrick Tull's readings of the books, but I tried one and didn't like all his huffing, puffing and pausing, sounded like he was about to drop dead while reading.

Meanwhile read The Martian myself last week, excellent stuff, am looking forward to Ridley Scott's film.

Am checking this out now, ten minutes in and seems very good, and well done with a narrator. It reminds me of this American Life podcast actually.

I listened to my uni pdf coursebooks through the windows text to speech facility (think Stephen Hawking). I quickly realised why I spent many hours asleep.  Mr Hawking sounds very interesting when talking about space, but he bores the tits of you when discussing 'Foucault discourse analysis'.
