I've seen something similar used at a gig on an overdrive pedal.

It was always on, so the sound was always overdrive, then when it came to solo time the volume was boosted so the amp gave more drive and cut.

Struck me as being neat, but a volume pedal would do the same job. Take up board space, mind.
