Solves a lot of problems:
* recording at full/half/quiet/silent levels
* IR loader
* headphone output
* built-in ambience/reverb (which avoids that weird too-dry headphone sound)

    Yes, you effectively have four settings:
    * full power
    * partial power -20dB
    * home level  -38dB
    * silent (when unplugging the speaker) for using the headphones or recording

    So it's not multi-stepped like a classic attenuator.

    Don't think so. The input is derived from a speaker level signal - e.g. 50W into an 8-Ohm load would be around 20V (rms). Any normal Line level output would be well under 1/10th of that, so I doubt that the X would be a good choice. 

    There are cheaper options available if you are using a Line level signal - Mooer Radar, etc.

    It lives under my monitor & is connected to my audio interface. Also, I don’t have a car. Taking head, guitar & pedalboard on the tube is plenty to carry without needing another bag,
