Rare 70's Park Marshall 1239 50w MV combo, sold, rare Elpico AC88 and cabinet £550

OK, now have way too many amps after buying a few that I have sought for years, but now I don't gig they need to go.

First up is a very rare Park (Marshall) 1239 50w master volume combo, £850, now £800.

Took me ages to find a good one - not many of them out there. Very minor bits of tolex missing as per photos. Marshall made these in the late 70's under another name as he got the Marshall name tied up in a deal with Rose Morris so the Park name came from his friend's wife's maiden name (I think). I've got the circuit design so will include that piece of paper - the designer is the legendary Steve Grindrod and the story is that he was allowed more leeway to experiment with the Park brand than with Marshall branded amps.

Hard to value these - the vintage guitar guide has them at $2.3k (so that's over £2k once shipping and duty factored in), but ATB just sold one (not as original as this as it had a replaced reverb tank) for £1,150.

These amps are quite sought after by collectors, the 'lead 50' utilizes a single 12 inch speaker. It's not labelled, but probably a Mckenzie speaker? I believe (aside from valves) that it is all original.

2 inputs and the gain boost channel  is footswitchable for a further boost. Reverb and usual bass / treble / mid controls plus obligatory Marshall presence ('edge' on this amp) control. Footswitch (non original - there is no chorus on the amp!) basically gives a little more drive to the lead channel and the other button turns on / off reverb.

Recently serviced by Richard at Electrohill.

Only change is that this one has (I think vintage 1970's) castors which are a bonus as it is a little bit heavy. A few spare valves come with this.

Sorry, this is collection only from East Finchley (London N2) , or I will drive up to an hour to deliver.

Next up and one that I am wavering about selling is a very very rare Elpico AC88 pa amp from the early / mid 60's: £500 plus £150 for cabinet, or £600 all in, now £550 all in.

These amps have early Kinks and Beatles association so are well sought after for those in the know. I think these early ones were hand wired. This one is in good condition and works well - they are very hard to find in decent working condition. Recently serviced by Richard at Electrohill. These PA amps were the precursor to the first Marshalls (Jim Marshall copied this circuit as well as the Watkins Dominator and Fender bassman) and wound up (it’s a very loud 20 watts) it is glorious. Sounds lovely just as a clean amp. Speaker outputs are 4 or 16 ohm. The Elpico's were made by Lee Products and later re badged (and not as well made) as the Studio City 20 (I've seen these sell for over £1k .There's one of these early Elpico models on Reverb in Denmark for over £1k but its had some changes made). The third input (for a mic) has been turned off as due to design issues it interferes with the second channel.

Will sell the cabinet separately IF the amp sells first. The tweed speaker cabinet is a 1x12 made by Juketone loaded with a Celestion Greenback G12M 25 16ohm speaker. Cabinet is made of poplar ply. On the Juketone website this cabinet unloaded is for sale for £189. Cabinet and speaker are virtually new, used at home only.

I would prefer collection from East Finchley, North London but could drive up to 30 minutes.

Rat modded Fender blues junior, £400 now £350. Now sold. This is a 2014 blues junior 2 that has also been rehoused in a larger pine cabinet and has an upgraded cannabis rex speaker. RAT is amp restorer in Cornwall who has now retired, but basically changed a lot of components in the blues junior that were poorly designed. So it has a modified power supply, upgraded tone capacitors (orange drops), bias adjustment, full lead dress, upgraded input socket, upgraded valves, modified tone stack, etc etc. The pine cabinet looks ok but came unvarnished so I've done an amateurish  / ok job varnishing it and I put a vintage repro Fender badge on it. I'll supply a non original footswitch for the fat boost. Lots of stuff on the net on these RAT mods, they are quite hard to find as in essence you get an almost hand wired blue junior. I think the mods, cabinet and speaker plus donor amp would have been a lot, so all in this would have cost someone almost £1k.

Slightly cheap price to reflect an unusual design feature in the new cab - the amp is in part supported by the plywood at the back of the amp, and as you can see from the photos, accessing the valves is a little fiddly - would suggest the new owner cuts the plywood a bit to allow better access, or leaves it as is! There is a small knock in the cab on the front RHS you can see in the photo.

Recently serviced by Richard at Electrohill (who shielded the amp too). He didn't mention the unusual design of the cab, so I thin that means it's not that big a deal.

I would prefer collection from East Finchley, North London but could drive up to 30 minutes. I might have a box so could post at buyer's costs and risk.

Gentle bump on a very rare, amazing and low priced vintage Park / Marshall combo...

  • Are these a similar circuit to a 2104/2204? I have one of those in combo form, and it’s righteous.

  • How would you describe the tones coming out of the Park? I've seen some forum folks saying "precursor to JCM" but curious for a view. Cool piece of history and I guess theoretically almost a straight ahead Marshall... Cheers

Sorry, not sure whether this is similar to the 2104 circuit, I'm sure there is something on line. Sound wise Ive only has it at bedroom volumes so far, so best to see what is on there on line. I'll crank it up when I get a chance and let you know.

Am listing on fleabay now as well, so grab this before it goes.
