My Dad used to swear by them for when he went fell walking. But then he also wore 3/4 length moleskin britches and red socks to his knees.

My dad used to wear old full length nightshirts to sleep in.
Fortunately he didn't have the hat to go with it.

I once mentioned it to my kids and for the following birthday they bought me one as a pisstake.
They were upset when I wore it. 

They will learn to never challenge me with something stupid!

They're meant to be good for keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer something to do with air trapped between the strings that creates insulation.

I think I had a string vest once when I was a little kid.  My dad always wore a vest, but the white cotton type, not a string one.

I’ve got a black long sleeve type version that I sometimes go to gigs in  usually with some other vest underneath I did used to wear it all the time with all my black stuff  I might have to resurrect it but I barely go out much since moving to Peterborough
