Floating stands?

Does anyone here use this? I've been considering one in my bedroom for my Gibson — the room has no access by pets or children and there's a safe corner for it. I like the look of these stands and they also seem to be more stable than regular stands because of the wide base.

But they have a hefty price tag, I saw someone recently say they use the same stands but without Gibson/Taylor/PRS branding so they're significantly cheaper. Does anyone know what these are?

Fender released a nice one  but nobody has had any in the UK yet.

Thanks! Do you find them better than a regular stand for stability, and do you know if they're safe for nitro?

Are they as stable as a more traditional stand? I've never tried one of these floating stands. They do look pretty though; but wouldn't they be hidden by the instrument? Bit expensivo too.

This below would be my favourite format for a stand for a valued acoustic. Stable and easy to lift with one hand. I have grandchildren around who are allowed to play with my metal resonator 'cos it's bombproof. Two other acoustics on this sort of stand tucked away in the corner. The rest on wall hangers!

I have one of those already and they are good. Not nitro safe though, so would need wrapping.

For the floating stand I think part of the point is that the instrument hides it — it's invisible to showcase the instrument

Personally I prefer the aesthetics of the cheaper one - I think the more expensive one looks like a reclaimed strut from a suspension bridge....
Everyone to their own but that's quite a price difference.

What does “floating” mean in this context?

It looks like a hanging stand, like the Hercules one I see most often these days which, I would suggest, is the most stable (and probably ugly) one I know of.

In the end, I cannot imagine that any of these fancy floating stands would be half as practical as the cheap, portable, durable, stable, very safe Konig & Meyer 17580. https://www.modernmusician.com.au/konig-meyer-17580 I have retired all my other stands and use these for everything. 

Oh, and they look better than the floating stands too, as all you can see from any distance is the guitar itself.

They do look much safer towards your instrument.

When I first saw one, @guitarjack66, I thought it looked a bit questionable and was concerned that guitars  might easily topple over. 

In one word, no.

It's actually much more stable and safe than a traditional two-rests-for-the-body and upright-for-the-neck guitar stand. You don't have to be so careful about lining the guitar up with the top of the stand when you use it either. (I.e., if you have had a couple of drinks you don't have to stress out, it will be fine.)

(Not that you or I would ever do that, of course.)


Do I sound like an evangelist for them? Oh well, so be it. They are bloody brilliant. And at 15 or 20 quid, they are a bargain.

A DIY job… some old shelving and a cheap wall hanger recycled.

I’d be happier with a bigger base.  I use the Hercules units on stage.

They are very stable and easy to move about .
They dont take up as much space as three legged metal stands and look much nicer.
My Nitro guitars live in there cases but it’s easy to wrap the foam with cotton bandage to make it safe for Nitro guitars if you want to hang them for a long time.
Not really suitable for gigging live because they don't fold up for a smaller footprint.
But for home and studio use they are excellent and look much nicer than a load of black metal .

I use wall mounted Hercules stands at home. They're nice and secure, safe on nitro, and you can get them with a "spacer" foam that lets you hang narrower instruments like banjos and ukuleles etc. 
I also like the little locks you can get (no use for preventing theft but great for stopping little hands getting hold of guitars)
