High Output single coils

What's Hot

I am quite taken with the lil 59 in my Tele and am thinking I might do the same with my Strat (have Lollar Blondes in atm).

I used to have hot rails years ago, but think I prefer the '59. Does anyone have any suggestions on models to check out?

Thanks.

I had bare knuckle sinners in an old Strat of mine and they were fantastic - still Stratty but very full sounding with bite too

Thanks @DrCornelius - I’ve never had any success with BKP personally, but I’ll have a listen.

Oil City Stone Tones are great for strat. Still sound vintage, but with more oomph.

A lot cheaper than the others mentioned so far, but nevertheless good quality and great sound, are three of the IronGear Strat pickups listed in order of output:
    Jailhouse Rail: https://www.axetec.co.uk/guitar_parts_uk_077.htm
    Smoke Stack II: https://www.axetec.co.uk/guitar_parts_uk_111.htm

I have a lil 59 on the bridge and the other two are Bulldog 67s made by Hayden Minette of this parish.

They are priced very reasonably for hand made UK stuff, and sound great.

Not sure how to define 'great' in this context. A bit like trying to explain what lamb tastes like.  But the guitar sounded and felt more alive after the Bulldogs were fitted.

Lip-smackingly greasy with a sweet and rancid taste.  Lovely  :)

I’d look at DiMarzio - heaps of options. Have consistently been more impressed with their pickups than I for some reason expect to be. Not a huge sample size, but I’ve liked more DiMarzios than Duncans.

Lamb definitely tastes of guilt to me.

Try the Duncan Red Devil which also sounds very good in parallel especially in position 2

A very good description of lamb.  Might also work as your dating profile.

My favourites have been the Dimarzio Chopper for noiseless, and the Duncan Quarter Pound bridge for real single coil.

I’ve tried a Tone Zone S and it sounds nice, but closer to a narrow sounding humbucker than a big single coil tone. Hotrails are fun but again, it’s a searing full on sound with less of that brighter crunch which I’m guessing you’d prefer based on liking the 59 over the hotrails

They're great, but not particularly high output actually.

Yeah - the Dimarzio versions weren't either.

Great with drive but I found them uninspiring with cleans.

FWIW Fender Hot Noiseless are not that hot. Definitely in the vintage zone compared with the pickups mentioned above.

I like the idea of hot pickups but not dark sounding ones, so I’m watching this thread with interest.

I used to have a Quarter Pounder bridge. It had a smooth tone with lots of bass thump. I liked it a lot.
