Helix with Boss RC500 looper advice

Does anyone use an external looper with their Helix?
I'm trying to get it set up so that the looper is available globally across all patches and amps etc and is also controlled via the midi but I'm struggling to see how to do this. I have the correct midi cables.
Does anyone use an external looper?
It's probably me being an idiot and missing something obvious...
any advice gratefully received!

I use the Boss RC 500 with the HX stomp, I have it in the fx loop.  You then have to add the fx loop block to any of your patched you want to use it on.  On the stomp there isnt a way (or at least that I know of) to apply it to all patches. 


As per the midi, I do have Midi setup, but hardly use it - yet. 

Do you have yours setup after the Helix, before or in the loop?

I have one of the big block TC Dittos in stereo in loop 3/4 via a small mixer that allows me to play a Roland guitar synth through the looper and the output of rhe Helux
