Epiphone SG Special

What's Hot

I bought an Epiphone SG Special last week for £238. Bargain! What a great guitar! Mahogany body and neck, 2 P90s, CTS pots, correct pickup spacing, unlike the Gibson, unless you go for the Custom Shop model for much more coin. Pelham Blue. What's not to like? I love it.

Looks great. Does it balance on a strap?

Lovely and great colour choice looks fab.

    Get yerself a Leeds pedal!

I made a demo of it with my 1965 SG Special to try to get close to a "Live at Leeds" type Pete Townshend tone, just using playing dynamics and volume control to vary from clean light finger picking to heavy power chords. If you like The Who from that era you might enjoy it. Anyway, the pedal is very good (also on bass guitar).

Better than my standard SG, perhaps because of the lighter tuners.

Many years ago I had a Hiwatt 50 and 4x12. I took it to one gig. I couldn't even pick it up, so the cabinet had to go. I kept the amp for a while, but it was impractical so I sold it a few years later.

For anyone interested, I have changed the pickups and pots. The originals are CTS with a linear taper. The new ones have an audio taper and I have wired it vintage style. The original pickups are fine, but I didn't want to disturb the original wiring so it all came out and I have had the Alegrees in another guitar so they were at hand and I thought I'd give them a whirl in here. I have since lowered the treble pickup a little. They are out of phase too, but I'll probably change that.

These are such great guitars, and imo better than the gibson version for more reasons than the ones you mentioned (Ive had at 3 of each). Enjoy!
