  • I remember seeing him on the TV a lot when I was a kid. Not a terrible innings but still sad. RIP. :(

For some utterly bizarre reason I played his "Stranger on the shore" about a dozen times on the day of my driving test.  It calmed me down.

So for me Acker Bilk means, "he helped me pass my driving test."

    Thank you.

  • My sister (who is twenty years my senior) was a fine clarinetist - I can remember her playing along to his records when I was tiny. A sound of childhood....

    So Farewell then Mr Bilk.

I once tried playing 'Stranger on the shore' on a vacuum cleaner extension and it sounded pretty good.

I then took up the clarinet but I was shit at it.

  • Saw him live a few years ago. Unbelievable... the charisma he had... audience was eating out of his hands... despite him saying very little and not being an animated or over dramatic performer.  Can't fully understand how he got the audience under his spell.... but he did! He just communicated warmth.... just by playing.  Amazing night.

  • I saw Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band in Chelmsford in 1976. He had a lovely tone on the clarinet.
