Beginner Drum Kit

What's Hot
Im looking to get a drum kit, my primary focus is to mic up the kick, hats and snare and record my own drums. Not bothered about toms.

I have been eyeing up some full vintage kits for around £300-£350 but they come with toms which I don't want. What are my options? Looking for a punchy sound, dry late 60's funk style.

Any recommendations? Should I just buy separate pieces 2nd hand?

Buy the full kit- it will be much cheaper.
Put the toms in a cupboard until you need them.
    You will need them, eventually.

My advice is to get a used Yamaha Stage Custom.
They are the best beginner kit and there are loads of them about.

I would avoid vintage kits- they are usually hard to get parts for.

Getting that sound (60's funk) is more about a) your technique and b) production/recording choices.
It is very little to do with the kit but most of that can be done with head and tuning choices.
Just avoid getting huge drums, an 18" or 20" would be great, or a 22" if it is shallow enough.
I would avoid a 22x18" bass drum for that sound, but a shallow 24" would also be ok, although not ideal.

(Deeper the drum, the longer the note).

This is good value, but you'd need to buy a snare.
