Painful clicky thumbs

Dear Fretboard Clinicians, 

I have developed very painful thumb joints - only the end ones nearest the nail.  If I rotate the thumbs at this joint, they both click and they both hurt.  Sometimes my left thumb joint is incredibly painful and I can't move it.

What's your diagnoses please ?

Your thumbs shouldn't rotate at the joint nearest to the nail.  Stop trying to make them rotate at the joint nearest the nail.

Clearly you are just falling apart like most of us gradually do after 60 or thereabouts.  If it doesn't get less painful after you stop buggering about with the joints try and get a referral to see an orthopedic consultant and/or rheumatologist in case it's serious and you are about to seize up all over.

Actually, you're right!  I'm being a tit.  What I'm actually doing it turns out is rotating my thumbs at the joint inside the hand and just moving the end joint up and down.  It just looks like I'm rotating the end joint!
