Has he a point? You decide...

"Last I checked, Waters is no longer in the band and Wright and Barrett are dead. If these are leftovers from The Division Bell sessions, then just put them on a The Division Bell special-edition release."

Controversy!!!!

  • I don't see controversy, I just see a bitter drummer who has a vested interest in having a whinge about bands carrying on in the absence of a particular member.

Gilmour has been in Floyd a lot longer than Syd ever was. So that makes him a founder member in my book. 75% of the band are on the new CD, that's a bigger percentage than a lot of bands still using their original name. Portnoy is talking out of his arse. :|

To me the wonder of Pink Floyd is down to the guitar work.

A case of Portnoy's Complaint eh?

  • Whatever people think about post-Waters Floyd - the guy left! I don't really see how carrying on after the departure of a member could reasonably be described as 'disrespectful'.

I gather the album has the highest level of pre-orders in Amazon's history - mine being one of them....

"If you really want, I'll meet you, Gilmour fans, halfway and at least concede with saying, okay, 'real' Pink Floyd is really only when Waters and Gilmour work together.”

How is that "meeting halfway"?  It sounds like a repetition of his initial criticism to me.

I'm sure he's a super drummer, but Portnoy appears to be a bit of a knob.  Dream Theater seem glad to be rid of him and even Avenged Sevenfold didn't want him.

    ...
I think the argument is that Waters didn't leave the band - he (unilaterally) disbanded the band. It was disrespectful of them to carry on using the PF name, and not just play dead like he'd told them to, and that is why he spent much of 87/88 frantically trying to stop Gilmour et al from doing so.

If you think Waters's position and behaviour were reasonable, then you have a broader mind than I. But I can understand how someone could use the term "disrespectful" in the context.

That doesn't change the fact that Portnoy seems to be a complete twit. :)

Because his first position seemed to be that Gilmour didn't make any contribution at all. I think, being a drummer, he must have got confused and thought that it was actually Waters that played all the guitar parts on the albums.

I think Waters's behaviour was that of a total ego-maniac. Leave by all means - but don't endeavour to get rid of the competion at the same time!

He seems in recent years to have acknowledged he shouldn't have taken legal action and a degree to peace seems to have broken out between him and Gilmour - which is right - they are both getting on and I'm a great believer that enmities should not be taken to the grave.
