Well, prompted by the Best Two-chord Songs thread, I’ve been listening to Etta James today. I was really only aware of two or three songs by her, so thought I’d shuffle some Etta James on Amazon Music. Wow! All great stuff, a lot of it was old blues and blues-jazz standards but she completely owns anything she sings on. Would definitely recommend.

The Chess album, These Foolish Things, is excellent if you can track it down. Ballads, but killers.

Etta James is one of my absolute favourites, think I prefer her ballsy raspiness to Aretha Franklin who is generally more venerated.

And Tell Mama is one of fave soul/R&B tracks of all time...
