Looks to me like a hedging tool, a Yorkshire billhook. Hope it works for you.
My grandad used to cut the sides of hedges with something like that.
    So did I...

Is that not more for horizontal branches/brush rather than vertical weeds?
Possibly,  but a lot of this stuff is bramble or quite thick growth so I'm hoping this will stand up to hacking away at it. I'll report back!

I inherited a scythe when we bought our house 20 years ago.  I also have a brush-cutter.  I have obviously never used the scythe but as I don't own a pitchfork, it may come in handy on here at some point.

Thing is if I do that some joker will show up with a real scythe and I'll feel like a fraud.

Brambles can be a right pain!

    Good luck!

Scythes are cool, but are very hard to master, sharpen & awkward to store. Not worth it for small areas & infrequent use.
Machete's Parangs, billhooks etc. are bad for all the reasons given so far, plus sharpening needed.
A sickle would be OK but involves a lot of bending over, sharpening & hand protection if not expert.

You can pick up a battery or mains strimmer for not a lot & it would be a sight quicker than the petrol version. Simples  ;)
Romanian labourer working for us ....lovely chap ,pure agricultural Trannsylvanian peasant .....had a very overgrown site to clear
The strimmer kept breaking down and not much progress ......he explained a tool that he always used at home ;I realised he meant a Scythe .
We happen to have an old one that hasn't been touched in 30 years......I sharpened it on a Whetstone and gave it to him .
Magic.......he mowed down quater of an acre in 3 hours ......it would have been best part of a whole day with a strimmer .

Well I just read the story and although it's very good I'm quite glad I didn't opt for the scythe now!

The axe/bilhook thing is working out very well by the way. Been out whacking the bramble,  it's a good work out as well.
