Minimizing the impact of your room on your sound

Applies to: recording, mixing and listening to music.

We all know how much the room can affect the sound of music played in your room.  Simply remove all the furniture and fittings [when redecorating for example] and your room sounds different.  It is different. It is still the same size but furniture, drapes etc. change the sound of the room.  For mixing, this might result in mixes that are dull sounding whereas they sounded fine through the monitors.  Etc.

An aspect that might escape attention is the sounds, usually added, of fittings and ornaments in the room.  A plate on a stand or a candlestick on a shelf or any such ornament.  Ornaments can 'ring' at certain frequencies thus throwing your mix out subtly.  But still out. It might be a good idea to spend a few minutes going round your room and checking what is vibrating [not that kind of vibrating!] and damp these vibrations either by placing the offending item on a doily or putting a blob of blue-tak under the offending item.

For glass on a glass shelf, the doily usually does the job.
