In all my days I've only ever heard one decent rage metal song. .

I'm never very comfortable with these labels and sub-genres anyway, but I don't think I've heard of rage metal before.  Whatever it is, I do like a lot of the tracks mentioned on this thread.

  • Didn't the bloke from Pitchshifter end up in the prodigy?
One of the guitarists played with them for a while I think

I think Pantera and Sepultura were considered "Groove Metal".

Pantera (I think) invented the term "Groove metal" for themselves. Sepultura were/are considered (by most) to be thrash metal. I've heard Sepultura described as "the Brazilian Slayer". Personally, I don't want to see Max Cavalera or Andreas Kisser's brazilians.......

Sepultura were considered death metal originally but by the 90's it was thrash. And then they jumped on the nu metal bandwagon with Roots.

I never thought of roots as nu metal. It's more like thrash combined with Brazilian percussion.

It doesn't have enough whining, inauthentic turntabalism, or white boy rapping to be nu metal

  • At the time sepultura were kinda associated with nu-metal and toured with nu-metal bands etc but i think you;re right they don't really have the same sound. Guitar wise roots is actually quite punk influenced I would say.

It was totally influenced by nu metal. They didn't go to indigo ranch because they lived Moody Blues, and they didn't chose Ross Robinson because they loved Détente.
Max wanted to sound like Korn and Deftones.

To me one of the defining characteristics of nu metal - at least initially - was "no guitar solos".  I never would've lumped Sepultura in with that (although I certainly haven't heard all their albums).

You are sooooo wrong.  Roots was 95/96, before Nu Metal.  You can hear the change of style through Arise and Chaos AD.  Roots is a phenomenal album and to be honest one of the best metal albums ever made. If anything Roots was an inspiration to a lot of players and lead to a lot of the Nu Metal sound like Slipknot etc.

Sorry but you are wrong. Korn released the Blind video in 94 which had massive impact. Deftones were pretty well hyped on the scene from about 93
Max even wore a Deftones shirt in the video for Roots.
Chaos AD has plenty of Voivod and Amebix influences but Roots was a change.

P.s. you do know I write for Britain's biggest metal mag?

It still doesn't sound like Nu-Metal in that Nu-Metal sounds shit and Roots is one of the best metal albums of all time.

I only bought it for the second disc of rarities. They peaked in 89, and live on the roots tour was pretty poor.

    Can't agree with that.

Chaos AD is an incredible album. I saw them in that era and they were pretty awesome.

I guess by Roots they all hated each other.
