If your budget can stretch to it try the Origin Effects Sliderig. Endless sustain at the stomp of a switch!

definitely wouldn't go for a boss or a dyna comp if you're looking for transparent compression. as stated above, philosopher's tone in theory offers unlimited sustain and you can blend in the dry signal for a more natural sound.

the barber tone press seems to come up quite cheaply in the classifieds and should also do a similar job (although i've not used one personally so couldn't comment on much sustain it offers).

  • Just watch Pete Thorns demo of the new Keeley comp. could do the job for cleans. If you need sustain with gain, probably a Suhr Riot. Or just lots of volume always works.

pretty much my 2 suggestions but I was going to say the Pigtronix Philosophers King. That does clean sustain with minimal compression and optional grit.

Ed the compressor (Marshall) is always a good cheap option too.
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

You may laugh, but a Line 6 Dr Distorto pedal has an option for sustain only. You don't need the distortion on, and it has options like a sustainiac pckup. It doesn't work as well as one, obviously, but it does work, and you can probably pick one up for £40 or so.
