This machine has been upgraded with 8GB of RAM and a 7,200rpm 320GB hard drive. The laptop has some scratches on the casing, some crayon marks on the charger and two grub screws missing on the bottom (which doesn't impair operation in any way).

I'm guessing the former, as the Retinas are not upgradeable.

Yes, I think your guess is right - the part number is MD101BA. The processor is a 2.5Ghz Core i5 and the battery life is good, mainly on account of the computer not being that old. I'll be frank, it's not the fastest machine, even with the hard drive upgrade, hence us replacing it so soon.

Stick an SSD and it'll transform the performance - just done it to mine and it's tons better.

It SHOULD fly. Tried resetting the NVRAM? We run those at work and they are nice n' snappy!

Yep, I've just done that on my Mac mini. The difference between HDD and SSD is night and day.

Thank you for this suggestion - I've just reset the NVRAM and PRAM and the machine is much snappier.
