Pubs with pianos.

What's Hot
Do any pubs have pianos in them anymore?

I've been thinking about putting together an old fashioned 3 or 4 piece (drums, bass, piano, woodwind) doing tunes from before the 50s.

I'd love it to be acoustic only, or as close as possible (other than vocal) but the piano would be the sticking point! Not sure there are enough possible small venues with a piano anymore.

I'd like the moon on a stick as well I suppose!

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

We have a couple locally - both pubs are like time capsules inside

  • The ones near me that do probably last had the piano tuned before the 50's!

  • I have seen a fair few on the gigging circuit in the North West / Wales, but I think they can get moved around and hence be out of tune.
I'm just a Maserati in a world of Kias.

If it has a piano isn't it a bar?

I did think about that, but other than official functions I don't see many hotel gigs round here.

Might have to suggest to the pianist I want to join that they want to get a good portable electric piano!

There was a "pick up joint" named the Pitcher & Piano, near to where I live, which had a beautiful black Steinway, on top of which was a gorgeous display of lilies in a large clear glass vase. I've never seen it being played.

The pub/venue has now been renamed the 18-30 Club.

  • I didn't think pubs having pianos was a thing any more. I suspect this is only still the case in places where the phrases 'gertcha' and 'I should cocoa' are still in use... ;)

  • I've only seen one pub with a piano in, and I was told off when I started playing it.

    :(

I'm not great, but not that bad! Apparently, it's there for decoration and if lang lang turned up, he would be ushered away from it.

For Swing & American Song book, forget the drums.  Guitar(s)/Banjo, Bass and Clarinet/Violin are all you need.

Drums, Saxes, Trumpets, Trombones are fecking loud compared to the rest.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

The drummer I have in mind has a cocktail kit and is quite happy with brushes.

I was thinking of clarinet rather than the other woodwinds. Lovely instrument!

It's really happy music to play, people love it - I can't recommend it highly enough.  You'll get gigs, but don't expect to make much money ;)

An electric piano with built in speakers and a curtain draped around the stand to make it look proper!

Some of those electric pianos sound pretty cool as well. I'm undertaking another project which is so far keys, cajon and guitar. Midi keyboard into Macbook running Xpand then into Bose L1 for me. I love that plugin for piano
