Like Nick Drake. Some things like Pink Moon I can only listen when there's no-one else around, no distractions, or my good mate who likes him too is about.
In a certain large-chain music shop I used to rummage in the cupboards under the racks, and luckily found an LP box set of his albums plus one of unreleased stuff and a small book (bizarrely it says "four compact discs" on the box... ).
Bought Pink Moon when i was 15/16 off the back of a recommendation by the Black Crowes(of all people - not much Nick in there!)
It fit in nicely with the phase my friends and I were going through at that time by which we would go down to Penny Lane Records at school lunchtime and buy an album based solely on its cover - whether it was weird or spacey but it had to be som, ething we hadnt heard based solely on that! I remember one of the others bought Nashville Skyline at the same time. Great cover
Im not sure i really took in his music at that age. It was a couple of years before i picked up his other albums which probably would have been the more accessible choices. I feel very strongly that you should listen to his albums in chronological order. They are like seasons. You can feel the defeat in Pink Moon. Its almost unbearable.
Great guitar player too.

Check this guy doing an uncannily accurate version:

I think I have all his stuff, it's great
I wish they would remaster them with some of the dated strings and flutes removed
Other than those elements, the music sounds largely undated
I had just read this story the other day:
