car extended warranty

Ok I was curious, I looked at warranty wise to see the exclusions. I thought as a big company it would be typical.
No surprise , try to find something that IS covered.
Best to put some money away each month and "self insure"....

Like you say, depends on the small print. Both BMW & Jaguar I have found very good as an extended warranty past the 3 years. However, the BMW was very reasonable on price whereas the Jaguar was very expensive. But I now go the uncovered route & if I suck a big bill so be it. Just no more guitars for a while. Much also depends on the exclusiveness of the car & cost of parts. In the ideal world it is best just to always ahve a car no more than 3 yrs so always in warranty but life don't seem to make that happen lately.

    I looked at warranty wise
Presumably that's for a car that's coming to the end of, or out of, manufacturer's warranty?

If it's the A3, I'd be tempted to take the risk and not bother with the after-market warranty.  In fact, I did, for about 7 years with my old A6.  I'd had the car from new and knew that it had been properly looked after, and had nothing about to go wrong on it.

Also helps if you've got a trustworthy local garage.  One piece of work it did need, the Audi dealer quoted £900-something and the local garage quoted about £400.  Then they charged me about half what they'd quoted because "the job turned out to be easier than we thought".
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

  • Musicman , it was warrantywise.
I must admit TT , beginning to think that way. I took out the Audi 5 year warranty when I bought it. I think I will search out a specialist Vag garage when it expires.
The car is looking like new, and only done 30k , and nothing out there rocks my boat.
The current is a 2.0 l 170 diesel so plenty of grunt. Lots of short journeys though so might have to budget for a Dpf in the future which isn't covered on warranties anyway.

I had an extended warranty on my current car for a couple of years after I bought it. It actually cost me money, not including the cost of the warranty itself, because when it had a minor fault - a seized rear brake caliper - the authorised garage the warranty company sent me to for the work were dishonest and incompetent, and although they did 'fix' the problem - but only at the second attempt, the first time they just freed the caliper instead of replacing it - they did such a bad job, fitting a slightly incorrect part and bodging it to fit, that it eventually damaged the electric handbrake... which didn't show up until after the warranty had expired.

My normal independent garage then fixed it all properly with the right parts, and the mechanic was not only able to tell me what the original fault was and what the other garage had done wrong, he would have fixed it properly in the first place and not damaged the handbrake cabling and hence burned out the motor…

So that's the last time I take out an extended warranty.
