Smartphone Roaming Charges - Europe

So I have a trip to Italy coming up and this will be a first with a smartphone......previous mobile was almost literally a steam driven thing which just kept on going and going....I wasn't a big user of the old phone but since I can now browse t'internet and get email to this new one, I have almost become one of those who I previously scorned and check the phone..er......regularly I suppose

I hear horror stories of huge bills when folks get back from their trip due to roaming charges and I'd like to avoid those...............what do I need to do / not do? Is this a disable settings thing? It is a contract phone with O².

Any non-Luddites able to advise?

Go to settings, then mobile, then turn off mobile data. Then find somewhere that does free wifi and use that.

Alternatively: You're on holiday. Just turn the fucker off!

Wisdom for the Three suggestion, it's awesome, worked really well in the US and one less thing to worry about. Really handy for checking times, directions and menus etc
