Newbie Question on Locking Tuners

I've yet to change the strings on my new Les Paul, which has locking grover tuners (first guitar I've owned with those).

Any do's and don'ts for these?

How much do you end up winding around the post (I guess the idea is not much), but I need to be able to tune to drop D once a set, so I need enough slack for that.

Thanks.

Ideally none at all. First line the hole in the tuner post up with the fingerboard. Pull the string tight through the post by hand then lock it - don't worry, this is still well below the tension for drop D. It should then come up to pitch in about a quarter to half a turn of the post.

  • Well that sounds simple. What an excellent invention.
