Much of his playing utilises open tunings, some of which are very bizarre - notably CFCCGD (low to high) in which the middle two strings are in unison.
He went on to do interesting electric (and indeed electronic) albums but for acoustic playing, the ones I've listed are the classics.
I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.
If it's strong songs you want, Edwina Hayes
for strong playing but no vocals, Tony McManusI'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.
John Fahey. Michael Chapman.
Pentangle.
Bert Jansch. The track The Black Swan is a masterpiece especially.
His album Avocet is lovely too.
Honourable mention to Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time who is a fine player but not flash or a soloist, and instead cincentrates on fine folky pop. Looking for a day in the night is probably his best, but a best of will be a good place to start.
I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to
