John Martyn. Start with Bless The Weather, Solid Air and Sunday's Child. If you like the weirder parts of those albums, get Outside In (Martyn frequently referred to this as his personal favourite - it's heavy going for a casual listener). The final album to feature significant amounts of acoustic was One World. It's a masterpiece.

Much of his playing utilises open tunings, some of which are very bizarre - notably CFCCGD (low to high) in which the middle two strings are in unison.

He went on to do interesting electric (and indeed electronic) albums but for acoustic playing, the ones I've listed are the classics.

well, I was gonna recommend Chris Wood and Nic Jones, so will have to go with some others (warning, most of these will be folk). I guess the daddy of English fingerstyle guitar would be Martin Carthy (though he is very folk, like none more folk). More accessible would be people like Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Davy Graham (some of his stuff was way out there, he got very inspired my middle eastern music and fused it with western music, very interesting stuff). More contemporary would be someone like Martin Simpson, who does a mix of more British based stuff as well as more American, with some excellent slide acoustic thrown in. I also like Phil Beer, who though a multi instrumentalist, does a lot of fingerstyle guitar.

Roy Harper is a bit different.         Nick Drake is well worth a listen too if you haven't already.

    John Fahey.  Michael Chapman.

Davey Graham is superb and I highly recommend Folk Blues and Beyond as a starting point.

    Pentangle.

Bert Jansch. The track The Black Swan is a masterpiece especially.

His album Avocet is lovely too.

Honourable mention to Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time who is a fine player but not flash or a soloist, and instead cincentrates on fine folky pop. Looking for a day in the night is probably his best, but a best of will be a good place to start.

  • And of course the great Richard Thompson - though you'd have to buy the recent 'Acoustic Classics' to get a completely acoustic album.

  • Or coming at from the other end Joseph Spence. Pretty much all in dropped D, somehow.
