Guitarist Mag

What's Hot
OK had a long train journey and nothing to read so forked out £5.75 for latest copy.

Have not read one since the demise of that place we don't mention.

Real waste of £5.75... Has not changed at all.

I read the latest issue on my Ipad last night. The article on the new Gibsons was disgusting. I wonder how much they got paid for it...

  • I'm saving that for a flight over the weekend - I still enjoy thumbing through a copy but I also bought (and have read) 'Guitar and Bass' magazine and really enjoyed it, especially the article on building a Red Special for under £200

  • Yeah, I bought it too. Wasn't impressed. I can't believe anyone actually likes the new Gibsons, they are horrendous… I agree with @Elx

  • So what do the Gibson detractors want Gibson to do? If they've upped their game in the build quality stakes, and come up with innovations that work, what's the problem?
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)

I'm going with the logo and brass nut followed by weird non traditional tuners not many have used but everyone seems to know Don't work.

I never bother now. It's aimed a rich bedroom blues guitarists, the same rehashed crap every issue. Even Guitar Techniques has been lacking recently.

I still buy every issue but the days when I read it from cover to cover are long gone.

The main cover features just seem to come round in cycles - a Les Paul issue, a Strat issue, a Joe Bonamassa issue, a Tele issue, an Amps issue.... of course it's inevitable to some extent after 30 years but there is a distinct lack of imagination.

Guitar & Bass isn't much different really, but it does have one feature I really enjoy reading, "Private Collection" - which is missing from the current issue, I hope they haven't run out of people to interview.

G & B is a much better magazine. Products and artists are often a far way off the mainstream, and the how-to articles are superb.

    Just a point.

I think they're trying to innovate with the Standards, hence those things. If people don't like them, then they should look at getting a Historic for a real Les Paul.

Gibson's recent pricing has been pretty mental though. They deserve all the slagging off where possible there.

I bought the one with Jimmy Page on the cover.

    A really f&%*ing short interview.

Nothing else really worth reading in the mag.

And then they shove it online for free a month later.

It's worth mentioning, imho, that while the printed mag declines, the digital content for Guitarist is getting better and better.

I have a print subscription but am thinking of going digital, or a joint print-digital subscription to start with.

This month's Gibson review was a missed opportunity - the 2015 model most people are interested in is the reissued Junior. No mention of it in the mag, just coverage of yet another boring Standard and Studio.

Is that true? tbh I don't really like the idea, but do they really NOT work?

I'll raise my head above the parapet to say that I think Guitarist mag is as well written as any other other specialist interest mag I have seen. Certainly way better than some other guitar mags, and better than it was in the 80s and 90s
It's a commercial enterprise, so there are limits to how much they can slag stuff off, and they will tend to big-up UK-made stuff, but is that a big deal? I don't get wound up at all reading it, although they do sit on the fence somtimes

Seriously, why all the hate? Can anyone give me a list of better magazines?

What's the problem with Gibson reviews anyway? Should the mag not review new models, when one of the big two has apparently based 2015 models around the premise of innovation rather than just cranking out the vintage features from before any of us was born?
Very brave of them to stick the robot tuners on them, I suspect that's a marketing error, but the mag needs to cover it.

I bought it because it had a review of my new Mesa in it - a glowing review, naturally.

I do like drooling over the gear photos. The white Caparison Dellinger reviewed this month is mighty fine.
