I do see a flaw in your plan. You dig for the 3 or 4 hours the tide is out. The tide comes in. The mud is replaced. You're gonna need more than just a shovel

Nah, the natural rate of mud replacement will be hugely less than my extraction rate.  It's quite dense stuff.  I expect to have to dig a bit extra out between tides, but not much.  However, only spring tides here reach that spot - neap tides don't come up that far, so I can have a window of at least a week without water at that point.  Digging it out is going to be easier than getting the thing off the estuary, down to road and into my garden !

I hope you're going to set up a webcam pointed in the direction of the intended excavation site, so the rest of us can kick back with a few cold beers and watch the Gower Time-Team dig up the bronze-age speedboat?

At the risk of pissing on your fireworks Emp, depending on the type of lay-up and materials, GRP (particularly old GRP) isn't necessarily as impervious to immersion in water as one might believe. Assuming that you get even the first shovelful of shit dug, and that you don't get your wellies stuck and need rescuing, you could be digging up a useless piece of old shite.

 

Still, by all means go ahead with the webcam, it should make interesting viewing. Can you have it on some kind of iPlayer, so we can watch stuff later, rather than live?

Well, stage one of my plan to conquer the high seas is complete - my new wellies have arrived.

I suspect that my ambitions to start the next Onedin Line may not reach stage three.  Stage two is putting the wellies on and going to actually look at the boat close up.

As a hint Emp, and I'm being serious now, take someone with you in case you get into trouble in the mud. Also, take a long rope, tie it round yourself and to something secure off the mud. Also a long stick/pole to check whether the mud in front of you is safe to step on is a very sensible idea.

 

I'm not pissing around, I've seen people get into trouble in mud, and wouldn't want you to get into trouble.

Nah... it's alright.  There are always footprints in the mud and none of them are deeper than an inch or two.  It's mostly sand.  I regularly see blokes walking across it, right near that point too.  Thanks for your concern anyway !  Still, if nothing comes of my nautical ambitions, I'll still have a nice pair of wellies.
