The novelty of car crash TV wore off a long time ago for me. It usually just seems like mocking people to me. Big brother, etc...

I'm guessing that a lot of the ultra-camp stuff on TV is aimed at women who feel a little bit like a "fruit fly", and want some of the edgyness/coolness to rub off. Maybe it makes unrelaxed hetero men feel more secure in their sexuality, I dunno

I'm unclear on how many gay guys find ubercampness attractive, but since AFAIK most gay guys aren't camp, the prevalence of campness amongst gay TV people seems unbalanced. 

btw I saw that documentary about 70s TV recently. Bloody hell, that was scary, especially for race issues, but it did try to explain some of the way TV developed then, e.g. Christopher Biggins being more subtle in Porridge as opposed to his previous role after getting some complaints about campness (I know it's hard to believe with Biggins)

I dunno, the Ru Paul thing isn't really ubercamp....it's more like a Leigh Bowery performance type of camp.
