do you know what,  my ££ is on the motor in the lens,  Id personally do nothing until Ive had the opportunity to prove that one way or the other

Also, do not take it to LCE! Take it to Lehmann in Stoke. Proper fixer type people there.

Genius award for @bertie (and the rest of you). It is indeed the lens. Tried it with an EF lense from an old EOS500 and it focuses find in the EOS450D.

It's more than likely one of the flex cables inside the lens rather than the motor.  Have a look here:- http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=flex+cable+efs+18-55  The flex cables are dirt cheap if you fancy having a go at it.  You've got nothing to lose really !
