Wonkey Indicators

The indicators on my car (2003 Audi A6) have gone a bit wonky

They seem to flash a few times then stop so I'm assuming that the relay is busted.

Anyone worldly wise able to suggest how big a job it is to get it fixed?

I fixed my mates headlamp last week by hitting it with the palm of my hand a few times-have you tried that?

Funnily enough I've just scouted a couple of Audi forums who have said the relay is behind the hazard switch and giving it a good beating sometimes clears it up.

Can't really see how hitting your mate's headlamp is going to fix MonQ's indicators ...
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

Find where the relay is (under bonnet fusebox or interior fusebox). There's probably a few relays the same in the same location.
Swap for something trivial e.g horn.
    Test.
Relay should be about £15 to replace. Unless Audi have "special" ones.

Edit: I just googlefoo'd this and they are "special" </sigh> so you can safely ignore this advice.

Sounds like an intermittant earthing rather than a relay

Is it the same on both sides? And VW/Audi hazard switches (actually all hazard switches) can easily go bad.

Probably worth a good squirt of contact cleaner into the switch as well.

It's a deterrent. When his car sees another car getting beaten up it gets its act together.

I've just been out and banged the dash and amusingly it does make the indicators flash a couple more times before stopping.

Supposedly the part is about £20, but fitting it requires partially dismantling the dashboard. I'll have to give my local emporium a shout and see if they can do it.

How about just leaving the lights on and winking with either your left or right eye depending on which direction you're turning?

On an Audi? How did you notice?

just to check, when you say wonky are they on, then off, then on, then off, then on, then off etc. in rapid succession?

All jokage aside, this is definitely the relay behind the warning lights. Its a known VA Group issue and a relatively easy fix. Just change out the relay if you can as it will come back to haunt if you don't (t shirt bought there).

Look for anywhere local that services Skoda taxis, it's the same part and probably about 80% cheaper than main dealer.

    Cheers

  • Does it happen with the hazard lights too? I would guess they share the same relay.
