Can't you use normal drive pedals for bass? Something transparent perhaps?

yes, though the voicing of the Bass Soul Food is supposed to be aimed at bass frequencies.

I do have a Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent OD here too (I'd forgotten I have it as I haven't used it for ages) - I'll have to try that too
