Almost as good as Beige .
    ;)

On a more serious note, Syd Arthur are excellent ('mellow' but not 'depressing', hopefully?)

  • Mastodon's "Crack The Skye" album is proggy/ conceptual. Nowt else of theirs is like it, but I think this one's worth a listen.

Anyone said Coheed and Cambria yet? Not really my bag, but I think they have some Rush-esque/ Proggy moments...?

    Van Der Graaf Generator.

I cant believe nobody has mentioned them yet. I know they arent a guitar band as such but they are right up there. All of their 70s stuff is fantastic and they are still going strong today producing decent albums.

    Peter Hammill is a genius

Got Crack the Skye, The Hunter and whatever the new one is called. :D

And yes Coheed... Long time fan, seen them live 2 or 3 times. I don't like anything before the Good Apollo... album. But their most recent double offering is awesome.

I forget people label them as "proggy" lol

Later Iron Maiden - Brave New World, Dance of Death, Final Fontier - are quite proggy. As is Seventh son of a seventh son.

    All worth a listen.

    Gentle Giant,
@CeeBee I had guitar lessons from Kerry Minnear when I was at college, a true gent that guy.

I really should look him up and drop him a line, I think he still lives near my parents in Solihull.

  • I kind of just thought of some others that I have!

Someone mentioned Mars Volta. I've got a handful of their albums. :)

    - Oceansize (I have the Self-Preserved While the Bodies Float Up album)
    - Pure Reason Revolution

And some others I don't have yet that I would consider progressive...
    - OSI
    - Circus Maximus
    - Avantasia (almost breaks my "no symphonic metal" rule! But not quite)

Ooh I own a copy of JT's "Aqualung", how did I forget that???

What other albums would you recommend? The little pack of 5 studio albums is always floating around in the shops over here.

I have that album! I wasn't sure I would necessarily go for the prog label. But I love that album. :D Asymmetry is pretty good too though

For Jethro Tull, I would recommend Thick as a Brick and Minstrel in the Gallery. If you want more folky styles, Songs From The Wood is a good starter.

Also, Genesis' Selling England by the Pound is a great album.

So it doesn't need to actually be new?

    Kansas.

  • Oh sorry @Philly_Q yeah it doesn't matter if the band is "new" or not I just meant "new to me" :)
