How would you play this bit?

In the "Dreams tour" version of Big Love by Fleetwood Mac, there is this bit in the middle.

It repeats a lot and moves around. I've been playing using this pattern: PMIA. 

However I think it's played like this: PMPM.

Which would you do? I think I need to stengthen what I can do with the A finger but just curious as to how you'd do it...

Looks for a candidate for outside picking to me Otherwise pmia - I don't really like using my thumb on the treble strings unless I'm doing a Knopfler solo

It depends how you want to phrase it. PIPI would give a stronger note on the third beat, and take away your "weak finger" problem. PMIA would give the rippling effect that I associate with Lyndsey Buckingham, and that's what I'd use

I think Lindsey actually does PIPI! But I'd like to just do PMIA...

Just checked a bunch of vids and he does it like this:
