How do I get this tone

What's Hot
shaunmshaunm Frets: 1644
Without owning a 50/100 watt amp and or spending £1000's on the amp.

Obviously JD Simo is a very talented guy so let's work on the assumption I don't have his skills or 62 gibson.

What amps do people recomend to get into this ballpark?

Hmmm - no shortcuts here I'm afraid. You need a decent tube amp, NOT master volume, cranked into some decent Celestions.
20Watt Plexi head minimum with good cab. Amp on 3/4, good guitar with Humbuckers and no pedals.

Make sure you leave the snare wire on.

Treble booster with a full range control can get you close to that but you still need a loud amp that's on the edge.

You make sure you've got understanding neighbours ..or live miles from anyone... cos in the vid he's got that amp cranked!

    Sounds bloody nice too :)

It's a cranked Non MV amp. Whether you went 18 watt Marshall or 50 watt, it'd be loud when giving you that tone. The guy playing is also making good use of Volume and Tone Controls to vary the sound. You wouldn't have to spend 1000's to get that tone, but you'd have to invest many hours practicing and have understanding neighbours.

Oh believe me I wish I had a way of playing that loud and it being ok.

JD Simo is an American session guy, his playing is truly amazing. He has an obsession with anything 60's but he really has nailed it.

  • He gets a pretty similar tone from one of the new 15w Supro amps here.

Loving the rig rundown. Having to watch in bits though, it's so long.

Hmm, I don't really like that, sounds quite messy and frantic without being particularly melodic. All though as I write, it's picked up after he slows down a bit.

That's some pretty fancy footwork. I know if I tried it, I'd end up a crumpled heap on the stage. Nice tones.

    I know, what a dancer!

I thought great note choice and playing as you know JB is going to go note crazy.

noise very much being the appropriate word
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.
