    It's from Treasure Island. As I recall, receiving a piece of paper with a black spot on it meant that you were a marked man and that your days were numbered.

    I got right into it after having played for about 10 years without it, well worth the effort.  I have grade 5 RCM in classical guitar and got more diverse gigs because I could read(pit band for live plays, some recording session).   Very useful to know even if you don't use it all the time.
