should I have a noise gate?

no 1 strat is a but buzzy, as is the BM Special when going through the noisy channel of the amp, and esp so if I kick some distortion in at the front end.

should I, do you, use a noise gate to tame it a bit?  and if so does it go at the very front of the chain or the end?

The wost thing is the dirty look I get from the other guitarist who mistakenly thinks i'm going to take his head off with the sound, which is getting on my tits a bit.  Obv I do wind the volume down in between songs coz i'm not a complete doughnut, but there are a few seconds of unrestrained buzzing at the mo.

Single coils? New pickups I would've thought in this case?

Are the pickup cavities properly shielded?

An MXR Smartgate should cover what you need. Small, really easy to set to remove hum without upsetting the tone balance.

I think I might need one but in my case it's poor technique that causes the issues rather than my gear. I don't play high gain very often but when I do it sounds a proper mess. Poor muting, fingers sliding on strings etc
I know I should sort myself out but it is tempting.

A noise gate won't really reduce that kind of noise, unless it's set so high that it really affects everything a great deal - your tone will be different, and you'll lose a lot of sustain.
