    Worth doing but the pro-built ones will probably look better.

    Well I left my 8" x 1/2" strips outside and now they are all curvy from the dew so probably firewood after all.  Real wood is a nightmare.  You pay for something that has been selected as relatively knot free, and then again graded as straight and true and not warped or split or cracked after all the energy that has gone into to it to reduce it's moisture content.

    CLS, which is what my 8" strips were cut from (8x2's) has a much higher moisture content that joinery quality softwood in my experience.  But of course you cut any bit of wood along the grain and weird things usually always happen as you release the tension.
