Band audition video, what to do?!

What's Hot

I've put my name in for a guitarist for an established locaish band called Cartoons can't die via joinmyband and I've been asked to provide a video of me playing. Not a problem, I have a camera and mic and stuff. But I'm unsure of what to play! Do I do a cover of a whole track? I've already learnt a few of their riffs by ear. Should I play them along to a click to show I can play their material easily, and in time? or is that cheeky to play their stuff?

First time in a *proper* band situation (These guys have an album and music videobeing released soon) and I don't want to look like a twat!

It seems I can't make the link to the video work no matter how hard I try. If you click the "Tuesday, 21 oct.." text it will take you to the video

Play something you know well and play well and that shows off all your best assets.

If you do an audition video don't be shy or boring. Play along to a track like you're performing at a gig, nail it musically but show you'd fit in and look good on stage. It will help you stand out from everyone else who will record sat down on their computer chair and or not do step one which is send a video (trust me, loads will send recordings and/or just send info and nothing else). If they want a video they're probably thinking about image and stage presence as well as ability.

    So, in summary...
    • Play the song right
    • play standing up
    • make video
    • play pointier guitar
    • do lots of jumping about
    • windmill arm a bit
    • pick slides
    • throw pick at camera
    • WIN

To be fair, thats really useful seeing as playing sitting down at my computer chair is EXACTLY what I was gonna do... I may even bother to mic up my amp, record it all and sync it up.

At least play stood up and nod your head in time. Extra stuff is up to your own style or what the band is like. If you're going to do any guitar spins don't stand next to TVs or fish tanks. Or do if you want YouTube ad revenue down the line haha.
