    audio taper is nice with overdriven guitar/ volume reduction

    Log pots or one of the specific 'guitar' audio tapers sold by specialist resellers - it does make a difference.

    Thanks all. Typically I have an abundance of 250Ks in my parts box but no 500s.

    You could try them. They're pretty bright pickups and it might work well, especially if you stick with .022uF caps instead of .047s which you would more usually use with single coils.
