What do you consider to be a good Solid State Guitar preamp, that's not a pedal?

The sans amp psa or rocktron stuff has always been good.

I assumed has was asking about solid state (ie analogue) not digital modellers…

The SansAmp PSA is still probably the one to beat.

I second the Sansamp. Very flexible and surprisingly good at taking pedals.

    Why not a pedal?

Sansamp, also Coopersonics used to make a big valve preamp thing about 10 years ago. I used one in a studio once, but I forget it's model name.

I've owned a couple of Sansamp preamps (I still have a PSA 1 but haven't used it for a while) and whilst they are flexible, I was never that impressed by the clean tones from them. High gain on the other hand is where they shine. Just my opinion but if the OP is looking for Fender/Vox tones then I'm not sure the Sansamp is the best option.

Some people seem to like the Session JD10. I don't think the early ones had a footswitch on them, so not really a pedal.

Yeah be using this through an  amp return for fly in gigs and it's spot on.

Some people seem to like the Session JD10. But I have no idea why.
    Edited for accuracy.

Just gone this route for a bit of home noodling - sounds pretty darn good.

For a couple of hundred quid on e-Bay, you can't beat a GSP1101. Good sounding amp models, decent FX, does 4 cable really well and with the C63 beta firmware it's incredibly flexible.
I use an Axe II now but I kept my GSP for backup and I still gig with it occasionally and it sounds great.
