I like my hot rails ...... But

What's Hot
axisusaxisus Frets: 28341
I put a hot rails pup in the bridge of my strat and I like the extra grunt, but to be honest I'm not so keen on the look of it. Can anyone recommend a similar pup available in off white ideally that is similar in sound, splittable, and looks more conventional?

Why not just get an off-white cover for it?

It is off white, I want pole pieces not rails though.

  • I'm thinking of trying these out in a single coil guitar that I play with a lot of gain (hum driving me nuts with my current set)

Ahhhh, gotcha. Well, the problem is that stacked 'buckers sound more like single coils than humbuckers, so you're unlikely to get that Hot Rails tone from it. The closest might be a SD Lil '59, but that probably doesn't have the right look for you either (same goes for a Red Lace Sensor).

Don't think they do them in anything except none more black ? At least not last time I looked...cos I fancied them for one of my Strats...

The Irongear Smoke Stack II is definitely punchier than a standard SC and will preserve the look of your guitar but they're not as hot as a rails p/u. Fairly cheap to try though.

Agreed (well, any I've tried, anyway).

Exactly as they are in a Strat bridge, really ;)

I had a DiMarzio Tone Zone (currently for sale...hint hint) in the bridge of my Tele, and that's kinda like a beefed-up Hot Rails - excellent for rock and metal stuff.

  • haha, i meant what is the sound like? as i've always associated it as a "metal" pickup but can it do classic rock as well? or anything else other than high gain shred?

That's what I meant by "exactly the same..." - they're medium-output humbuckers (by today's standards), so yes...they can do classic rock too.
