Scot Grove makes some interesting observations on this in his blogs and you tube channel
.......claims its scientifically proven that sustain is.............
    longest in bolt ons
    medium in set necks
    shortest in thru necks
apparently despite this confronting perceived wisdom there is a lot of supporting science

I'm not going to cut the neck off my SG2000 to test this idea
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)

I only have 4 guitars (2 bolt, 1 set, 1 thru) and I'd rank their sustain as:
    longest in bolt-ons
    medium in the through
    short in the set neck

I think bridge mass and stability are a bigger factor tbh.

I struggle with Scott Grove. I'm sure there's some real knowledge in there somewhere but he's such an arrogant, matter-of-fact prick that I can't bring myself to agree with him.

Gain and amplified volume might have some influence as well. I always wonder how much bloody sustain you need anyway unless you're planning on a concept album inspired by whale song

Going back to the original question, does it really matter.  I don't really care if I like the way it sounds.

GOOD POINT ..........how much does sustain matter ?
for the rock players there isn't much that pedals etc can't help with and for the really serious jazzers the flatwounds kill any sustain pretty quick anyway ........
Resonance matters........probably not because of tone although notes dont die away so fast but there is a "feel " issue like the rectifier thing in some amps ..........if you have ever played a really, really resonant guitar it feels alive and buzzing in your hands ( and through your belly once you reach a certain age !)
