I am sure I played in band with him in the 80's and if it is him then the two pick guards are due to his unique shredding (in the literal sense) of his guitar, heavy handed bugger.

Oddly enough I have been trying to watch Tommy and there is a Frankenstein guitarist in that ( the rock star that the vicar's daughter marries - very minor spoiler there).
